Transfăgărășan Highway (DN7C)

Cârțișoara · Cârțișoara · transylvania

The Transfăgărășan Highway (DN7C) climbs from the village of Cârțișoara into the Făgăraș Mountains in a sequence of tight hairpins, stone viaducts, and sudden viewpoints that open onto deep glacial valleys. One moment you’re threading through spruce forest and cool shade; the next, the road breaks above the treeline where wind carries the sharp scent of rock and alpine grass. Even at a standstill, you can hear water rushing somewhere below, and see ribbons of asphalt stitched across the slopes. At higher elevations the landscape turns stark and spacious, with scattered boulders, lingering patches of snow in sheltered gullies, and clear mountain light that makes distances feel deceptive. Pull-offs invite slow pauses for photos and picnics, while the journey itself is the main event—an immersion in altitude, weather shifts, and wide, cinematic views that change with every bend.
